Live in Cook required for a private home in Hertfordshire, an hour North of London (35 mins on train). The family would also consider a couple (one to work as cook, one to work as a part time housekeeper - 15 hours per week over any days they choose, or just a cook on their own). Having someone who can cook is the Principals main requirement.
The Cook would be expected to provide breakfast and lunch and prepare an evening meal for supper, ready to be cooked by the family (left with instructions). During the week you will be cooking for 2. However, some of their family visit on weekends and during the school holidays, so the volume of food would be greater during these times. The ability to prepare vegetarian and vegan dishes and puddings is also required. Occasionally, driving the couple will also be required, so you need to be a confident driver.
The cook will work with another staff member to do menu planning, shopping, ordering, kitchen stock rotation and ensuring the kitchen and dining areas are clean.
Breakfast is usually had before 9am. When it is just the two of them they have granola/fruit etc, when there are family staying they have cooked. For lunch the cook needs to lay the table and clear it. For supper, the cook preps the food and leaves it with re-heating instructions (unless they are required to stay if there is a dinner party or similar).
There are ad-hoc larger events during the year which include catering for the village cricket events, family parties etc and the cook should be happy to help out with these, alongside another staff member.
An animal lover is required. They have chickens, and a dog that requires feeding and walking at times. During your working days if the principals are away you will be required to look after the dogs, but do not need to sleep in the house with them - just need to feed, walk them etc and make sure they are happy and safe.
A flexible, can do attitude is needed!
The family have another longstanding live in couple that work on site (they work Monday to Friday), so the ability to get along well with others and work as part of a team is important.
Hours of work
Thursday to Monday – 8am-5pm. Including a 30 minute tea break and 1 hour for lunch. Any over time/bank holidays worked will be given as time in lieu. Tuesdays and Wednesdays off. Occasional dinner parties where you will be required to work later.
You will be provided with a lovely 2 bedroom, fully furnished (or unfurnished) cottage with all utility bills paid, and a car provided (for both work and personal use) with unlimited fuel. Salary will be in the region of £35-40,000, but this will depend on experience. 28 days holiday per annum, statutory pension allowance. This is a permanent, payroll job. If the cook has a partner that would like to work as a part time housekeeper for approx 15 hours a week (over any days they choose) they would be paid at £15,000.
It is essential that you have a driver's licence, and fluent English is essential. You must be non-smoker. Pets will be considered. Partner/child living in the property also considered but the partner should be happy to assist in the house with functions as and when they happen. The partner can also work elsewhere.
The right candidate for this role would be a passionate cook that would like a secure role in a lovely location. The candidate should have a 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude and be willing to muck in when not busy cooking.
